Geography
The town of Perušić is located in the southeastern part of Lika , at an altitude of 575-600 meters, in the valley of the river Lika, in a field fenced by hills from the west of Klis and a railway line from the east of the Old Town of Perušić ( Horod. Stari grad Perušića ), also called "Mound" ( Horv. Gradina ).
Perušić is connected to the main roads of the country, including the road of national importance D50 (from Otočac to Gospić ) and the highway Zagreb - Split . The main railway line MP11 connects the city with Zagreb and Split.
History
The area has been inhabited since primitive times. On the way to Otochatsu, artifacts of the Stone Age were found, as well as a large number of finds from the Bronze Age , including those from the 8th and 9th centuries. In the forest of Begovac, there is an ancient Roman monolith , on which is engraved a solution in a dispute over water between Illyrian tribes.
Perušić acquired the features of a full-fledged settlement in the XVI century , when he was at the turn between the Ottoman Empire and the European powers. Founded by Dominic and Gashpar Perushichi.
When the Turks conquered Lika and Krbava (about 1527) in the Hundred-Croatian-Ottoman War, the fortification of Perusic became the main stronghold of the Turkish Face. It was the boundary between the three empires: the Hapsburg monarchy , including the remnants of the Hungarian-Croatian Union , the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire - the place of constant wars. Liberation from the Turkish yoke in Lika began in 1685.
Subsequently, Perušić was under the rule of the Austrian Empire [2] , and after the Austro-Hungarian agreement from 1867 until 1918 belonged to the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia . [3]
During the war in Croatia (1991-1995) Perusic was the front-line zone. Even after the stabilization of the situation on the battlefields and international recognition of Croatia, military clashes occurred in Perušić [4] .
Culture
According to historical documents, Perušić can be called the cradle of Croatian literacy. After the creation of a typewriter in the neighboring village of Kosin, it was printed, one of the oldest printed books in Croatia and Europe ( Horv: Misal po zakonu rimskoga dvora ), with numerous illustrations. The book was printed in 1483, just 28 years after the Gutenberg Bible. [five]
Economy
The community of Perušić is one of the poorest in Croatia, whose population is constantly decreasing. The main types of economic activity are farming and other branches of agriculture . Some settlements are built on hillsides due to frequent flooding.
