Biography

Born on February 8, 1925 in the village of Kurmani (Nedrigailovsky district) , Sumy region . He studied at a high school in his native village.

Member of World War II . He was seriously wounded in the leg and at age 18 became an invalid of the first group. He was awarded the orders of Glory of the III degree, World War I of the first degree, “For Courage” , the public order “For Combat and Labor Achievements” of the III degree and many medals.

He studied at the historical faculties of the Stanislavsky Institute of Teachers (1948) and Kharkov University (1953). Recommended in graduate school at the Department of History of Ukraine, T. G. Shevchenko University of Kiev, after which in 1956 he was left to work in the same department, where he worked until his retirement in 1998 [1] . He worked first as an assistant, then as a teacher and senior teacher (1959), associate professor (1961) and professor (1984) [2] . In 1958 he defended his thesis “The Labor Movement in Ukraine during the Stolypin Reaction (1907-1910)” (supervisor - P. A. Lavrov), and in 1984 - the doctoral dissertation “The Spread of Marxism and the First Social Democratic circles and groups in Ukraine (1883-1894). ” In 1959-1967 he was the head of the trade union bureau of the historical faculty. In 1962-1976 and 1982-1988 he held the post of party organizer of the Department of History of the Ukrainian SSR.

For more than 40 years, he taught normative courses and special courses on the history of Ukraine and Ukrainian culture at the faculties: historical, philological, philosophical, economic, geographical, foreign languages ​​and journalism [3] . He supervised postgraduate students, writing undergraduate and term papers by students. He successfully combined teaching and research work with research. He studied and developed the important and poorly studied at that time problems of the socio-political and national movement in Ukraine at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century, cultural life in Ukraine in the newest period and other important questions on the history of Ukraine. Prepared and published over 150 scientific papers and teaching aids on the history of Ukraine and Ukrainian culture for students of historical faculties. Member of the dissertation council of the Faculty of History for the defense of candidate and doctoral dissertations.

On July 18, 2012, a Presidential Decree was signed, according to which Demchenko was awarded a lifetime state scholarship as an outstanding educational figure [4] . However, the scientist did not receive it, and on June 15 he was gone.
