Biography
Born in Sheffield in the county of Yorkshire in 1946 . He studied at the University of Leicester , graduated in 1967 with a bachelor's degree. In 1970 he defended his Ph.D. thesis under the leadership of Thomas Gaskell Tyutin and Peter Wilfred James on the topic "Systematic Studies of the Alectoria Lichen Genus, with a Special Attention to British Species."
Since 1969, Hawksworth worked at the State Mycological Institute, later renamed the International Mycological Institute. From 1983 to 1997 he was its director.
Since 2001, he worked at Complutense University of Madrid .
In 1970, in collaboration with Francis Rose, he published the article “Qualitative Scale for Estimating Air Pollution of Sulfur Dioxide in England and Wales using Epiphytic Lichens”, which became one of the first bioindication works in the history.
In 2002 he was awarded the Acharius Medal of the International Association for Lichenology, in 2014 he was awarded the Ainsworth Medal of the International Mycological Association.
For a long time he worked at the editors of The Lichenologist and Mycological Research , currently heads the editors of IMA Fungus and Biodiversity and Conservation .
