Biography
Alexey Pavlovich Kovalev was born in 1903 in the city of Temryuk in a peasant family with twelve children. In 1918, Alexei Pavlovich joined the ranks of the Red Army, was wounded in battle. In 1920, he entered the Kuban Agricultural Institute, and in 1922 he received a referral from the Central Committee of the RCP (b) to study at the Moscow Mechanics and Electrotechnical Institute named after M.V. Lomonosov (now the Moscow Polytechnic University ), which he graduated in 1929. Prior to graduation, in 1927, he was employed by a trainee engineer at the first SHPP through the Moscow Labor Exchange, where he worked as an installation engineer and at the same time did a graduation project. After graduating from the institute, Alexey Pavlovich continued to work at this power station as a duty engineer for the installation and operation of the boiler room, then as the head of the boiler room, then as deputy chief engineer.
In 1934, Aleksey Pavlovich went to work at the Stalinogorsk (now Novomoskovskaya) state district power station, where he worked for three years as the head of the boiler shop and the deputy chief engineer. In 1937, by order of the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry, he was appointed chief engineer of Mosenergo TPP No. 9, and worked there for a year and a half. At the end of 1938 he received an occupational disease and was transferred to disability.
In 1939, Aleksey Pavlovich was invited to scientific and pedagogical work at MPEI at the Heat Engineering Department (department of boiler plants). At MPEI Aleksey Pavlovich successfully combined teaching with research activities. In 1940 he defended his thesis, and in 1947 - his doctorate. In 1952 he became a professor, the head of the department of boiler building, renamed in 1962 the department of steam generator (ASG) of the Faculty of Power Engineering (EnMF). He headed the department until 1976.
From 1955 to 1963 he was dean of the Faculty of Power Engineering. Since 1977 he continued to work as a professor, then as a professor-consultant, and in 1985 he retired.
A.P. Kovalev is the author of about 200 scientific works, including more than 10 textbooks, atlases of steam generators of thermal power plants and nuclear power plants. Under his leadership, 20 master's theses and several doctoral theses were prepared and defended.
At different times, he was a member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Ministry of Heavy and then Power Engineering, a member of the heat engineering commission of the Higher Attestation Commission (HAC), chairman of the scientific section on steam generators of the USSR Ministry of Higher Education, and a member of the editorial board of Energia Publishing House.
