Biography

Born September 28, 1859 in Lötzen. Received a classical philological education. Without library education, he was hired by the university libraries of Berlin, Bonn and Königsberg, where he simultaneously studied the basics of library science. In 1897 he met Friedrich Althof and began to actively cooperate with him. In 1902, he was elected director of the University Library in Greifswald , he held this position until 1907. In the process of being the director of the library, he focused on expanding the circle of readers and providing them with a greater number of services, as well as improving the quality of service and increasing the working hours of the library. In 1907 he was elected director of the University Library in Breslau , he held this position until 1921. The merits in the activities of this library under him are as follows - he signed a decree on the creation of a Slavic department, which later became one of the richest and most complete in Germany. In 1921 he was elected to the post of Director General of the Prussian State Library in Berlin, he held this position until 1925, at the same time he served as chairman of the library commission of the German Science Emergency Society (now the German Scientific Research Society). In the mid-1920s he reached retirement age, but despite this, continued his library activities. He was elected professor at the University of Berlin . In 1928 he was elected director of the Institute of Library Studies at the University of Berlin, he held this position until his death.

He died on January 23, 1934 in Berlin.
