The 1988 presidential election in Rwanda was held on December 19 . The only candidate for them was the current president Juvenal Habyarimana , re-elected for a new five-year term.

These were the fifth presidential election in the history of Rwanda. At that time, the country was a one-party republic, and the was the only party allowed in the country.
