The Royan Research Institute ( Pers. پژوهشگاه رویان ) was founded on May 29, 1991 by Said Kazemi Ashtiyani and a group of his followers on the board of the University Medical Jihad as an accelerated rehabilitation surgery center whose mission was to provide medical services infertile couples, as well as research and training on pregnancy and infertility.
In 1998 and 2008 The Institute received licenses for the activities of the Center for Cytological Research and the Center for Medical Research of Reproductive Problems from the Board for Dissemination of Medical Universities of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, and in the fall of 2009, the Council for the Promotion of Higher Education of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology agreed to upgrade the status of the institution and transform it from an affiliated institute to an independent research institute [1] .
Institute activities
As part of its research, educational and medical activities, the Institute has three affiliated institutes and two centers of specialized services (the Infertility Treatment Center and the Center for Cell Therapy), combining science and practice in their work:
1. Royan Institute of Biology and Stem Cells. This institute works in the field of transplant medicine and is engaged in the study of stem cell biology, the development of translational stem cell research in laboratory animals, and clinical trials. At the institute there are: a group for the study of stem cells and ontological biology, a group of nanotechnologies and biomaterials, a group for restorative biomedicine and cell therapy, a group for the biology of molecular systems.
2. The Institute of Reproductive Medicine "Royan". The Institute is working to increase the percentage of fertility, improve fetal and social health through the study and treatment of infertility in various fields of reproductive medicine. The institute has a reproductive genetics group, an embryology group, an epidemiology and healthy pregnancy group, an endocrinology and female infertility group, an andrology group, a reproductive system visualization group.
3. Institute of Biotechnology. It works in the field of livestock production and related products related to relevant biotechnologies. The institute includes a group of genetic engineering research, a group of sex cell biology and a group of biotechnologies [2] .
Scientific Effectiveness of Research Results
- publication of noteworthy articles with a significant citation index
- successful implementation of the cycle from the production of knowledge to its practical application, for example, stem cell transplantation after a heart attack, patients with damaged cornea, ischemia of the lower extremities, vitiligo; alleviating the condition of such patients and providing medical services in a number of these areas
- production of transgenic goats generated by coagulation factor 9 and tissue plasminogen activator
- growing livestock eggs (goats, rams and cows) under laboratory conditions, artificial insemination, cryopreservation of embryos, followed by transplantation to surrogate mothers, as well as the production of healthy animals
- The provision of IRI citizens with medical services for the treatment of infertility (more than 600 treatment cycles per month)
- prenatal genetic diagnosis
Technology Research Efficiency
- artificial insemination of a person
- reproductive cloning of pets
- cryogenic preservation of germ cells and human embryos
- genetic diagnosis before the embryonic period
- tissue engineering
- production of new proteins
- production and isolation of various types of stem cells of the umbilical cord, embryos and adults
- production of transgenic goats
- livestock embryo production
- transplantation using cell therapy
- private and universal cans of stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood
- bank of embryonic and multipotent induced stem cells
Cost-effectiveness of research results
The research institute “Royan” in addition to the scientific component of its research has always paid attention to their economic efficiency. In this context, in 2008 it was possible to obtain a human fibroblast growth factor within its walls, which resulted in a significant cost savings. In this regard, the plan of work includes obtaining the remaining growth factors.
Collaboration
The Institute conducts more than 250 joint projects within the country and more than 50 joint projects abroad.
Achievements
To date, the Research Institute "Royan" has registered a large number of achievements in the field of infertility treatment, stem cell research and biotechnology. Among them:
- Creation of the first child by in vitro artificial insemination in Tehran (1992)
- Creation of the first child in the country by microinjection method (ICSI) (1994)
- Birth of the first child in Iran using the method of prenatal genetic diagnosis (2004)
- the use of stem cells to treat heart defects resulting from a heart attack (first in the country, 2004)
- the use of stem cells to repair a damaged cornea (first in the country, 2005)
- Creation of the first private blood bank for umbilical cord neonates (2005)
- Creation of the first cloned animal in the Middle East (Royana, 2006)
- the birth of two cloned calves and three kids (2009)
- production of multipotent induced human stem cells (2008)
- the use of cell therapy to facilitate and treat patients with vitiligo (first in the country, 2008)
- Creation of the first universal cord blood bank (2008)
- creation of the first transgenic kid with a gene synthesizing the coagulation factor of 9 people (2009)
- the birth of the first transgenic kid with the gene for tissue plasminogen activator human (2010) [3] .
