The 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg is a city day , which was celebrated on a large scale at the city, federal and world levels from May 27 to June 1, 2003 .
Background
For the first time, the idea of magnificently celebrating the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg was voiced 12 years before the holiday in 1991 by Anatoly Sobchak , who was at that time the mayor of this city. In June 1991, an attempt was made to draw public attention to the problems of the city and collect donations for the improvement of St. Petersburg on the eve of its 300th anniversary. An international fund was created, in which people from the European Union and the United States took part, but in the mid -90s the initiative stalled.
A special decree to celebrate the anniversary was signed by Yeltsin , but preparations began to go faster only under Putin .
Preparation
In 2003, Russian President Vladimir Putin assumed responsibility for celebrating the holiday, leading the State Commission for the preparation for the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg. Natalya Batozhok, Doctor of Philology and Professor, was the Executive Secretary of the State Commission and the Chairman of the Preparatory Committee.
“The anniversary of St. Petersburg is an occasion to recall the greatness of Russia, about the origins of this greatness,” President Vladimir Putin spoke during one of his speeches. High priority and great attention made it quite ambitious for Russia, which rarely organized such events. The rulers of 45 states came to Petersburg to celebrate his anniversary. In those days, more than 2,600 events took place. The celebration scenario repeated the events of 100 years ago, when the 200th anniversary of St. Petersburg was celebrated. According to the plan, the 300th anniversary was bigger than all previous anniversaries, while maintaining its main highlight - the repetition of historical events.
Start of celebration
On the morning of May 27, 2003, service prayers were held in many churches. The treasury allocated 26 million rubles. to improve the weather, but all attempts were in vain, because it rained anyway. But this did not prevent the holiday.
The celebration of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg began at the Bronze Horseman . Governor Vladimir Yakovlev , presidential representative in the North-West Federal District Valentina Matvienko , speaker of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Vadim Tyulpanov , deputies of the city parliament, and a representative of the Romanov dynasty Dimitri Romanovich and honorary citizens of the city laid flowers at the monument to Peter I. Then, on the Sovereign Bastion in the Peter and Paul Fortress , a memorial sign was opened on the 300th anniversary of the city on the Neva.
In honor of the holiday, a special medal dedicated to the anniversary of St. Petersburg was minted, and together with the flowers it lay on the grave of the founder of the “Venice of the North”, along with the medals dedicated to 50,100,150,200 and the 250th anniversary of St. Petersburg.
On the same day, the relics of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called, delivered to St. Petersburg from the Greek city of Thessaloniki , were transferred from the Kazan Cathedral to St. Isaac's . At 9 o'clock in the morning there was a festive Divine Liturgy. At the end of the liturgy, the procession began: the faithful townspeople from St. Isaac's Cathedral came to the Palace Square, where prayers were held. For the procession used the icons of many temples.
That night the Winter Palace opened its doors for guests all night, the flow of which did not dry up until the morning.
May 31
On May 31, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the leaders of the states, who arrived in the northern capital for their anniversary, laid wreaths at the monument to Peter I. After that, they visited the Hermitage , St. Isaac's Cathedral and came to a concert at the Mariinsky Theater . In the evening, the guests were shown a water show in the waters of the Neva River, opposite the Winter Palace, near which stands for guests were located. The official opening of the holiday took place immediately after Putin congratulated all those present on the anniversary of the city.
To the sounds of the anthem, the famous Trinity , Birzhevoy and Palace bridges were lit. First, the Shtandart ship, an exact replica of the frigate, built in 1703, entered the Neva water area. More than 40 six-yacht moors entered the river to meet him, with the flags of those states whose heads arrived in St. Petersburg to participate in the holiday. Viewers were shown a reconstruction of the sea battle, which was in May 1703, which ended with the release of Russia to the Baltic shores . Marking a victory, ships appeared on the water scene, on the masts of which cavaliers and ladies of the Peter the Great era were depicted, and powerful fountains turned on at the Peter and Paul Fortress. The laser show of the Japanese master followed, during which there were small failures.
June 1
On June 1, the guests of honor were held in Peterhof, where they were shown a water-musical performance: artists and musicians performed fragments from a ballet on an improvised stage next to the fountains.
After the holiday, an international summit was held in Strelna .
