In 1838, after revising his essay on Livia Andronicus , he presented it as a dissertation under the title "De vita Livii Andronici dissertatio, Dorpati Livonorum" and received a master 's degree in Roman literature. The Minister of Education, Count Uvarov, was present and participated as an opponent at the master's debate. Immediately after this, Count Uvarov proposed to the new master the position of adjunct in the department of Greek and Roman literature at the University of St. Vladimir , and on September 29, 1839 Dellen was confirmed in this position. In 1850 he was appointed correcting the position of full professor in the same department. In 1856, for the analysis of the essay by S. V. In addition to professorship, in 1857-1862 he was the director of the Kiev 1st Gymnasium at the invitation of the trustee of the Kiev educational district N. R. Rebinder .
In 1867, after thirty years of service in the educational department, he retired, but the council of Kharkov University at the same time invited him to take the place of an ordinary professor in the department of Roman literature at this university. Dellen accepted this offer and, having occupied the chair at Kharkov University, remained there for three five years until his death, continuing here, as at Kiev University, to present to his students both the history of Roman literature and Roman antiquities, and ancient mythology. In delivering his lectures, Dellen followed the method of J. I. Neykrikh and, thanks to this, gave his students the full opportunity to thoroughly study the Latin language.
