Slim Aarons was born in New York in 1916 . At the age of 18, he joined the US Army , photographed for the military academy of West Point, and later participated as a military photographer in World War II (awarded the Purple Heart medal). His black and white photographs of this period reflect the horrors of war and post-war devastation. Later, when he was asked to make a photo session of the landing of an American landing party in Korea , Aarons said that during the fighting he understood: the only beaches he is ready to land on are those where beautiful girls are sunbathing. | Gossip by the pool - English. Poolside Gossip (Palm Springs, 1970) | |
Slim Aarons did not use the services of stylists or make-up artists. His creative credo was to “photograph attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places . ” [1] [3] A typical example of such an approach is a picture taken in 1970 of Gossip by the Pool ( English Poolside Gossip ) [4] , depicting rich secular ladies near the house of authorship of the famous architect Richard Neutra . [5] In an interview, Aarons said:
I knew everyone. They invited me to their parties, because they knew that I would not harm them. I was one of them.

Gangster Charles Luciano, nicknamed “Lucky” (“Lucky”) - one of the “ bosses ” of Italian-American organized crime , stood out sharply from the total number of “glamorous” characters that were photographed by Slim Aarons. Aarons followed him everywhere, including to Italy , and took many pictures of the “godfather”.
Slim Aarons died in 2006 in Montrose, New York, and was buried in Cambridge, Massachusetts . [1] [7]
In 1997, Mark Getty, one of the founders of Getty Images , bought the entire archive of the photographer. [8] Director Fritz Mitchell shot the documentary Slim Aarons: The High Life (2017). [9]
