Lyudmila Alekseevna Kartashova (born July 26, 1935 , the village of Kvezan , Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ) is a Soviet and Russian African scientist. Specialist in the history, language and culture of Madagascar , president of the Friends Club of Madagascar. Full member of the Malagasy Academy of Sciences.

Biography
In 1958 she graduated from the French department of the faculty of foreign languages of Moscow State Pedagogical Institute IN AND. Lenin . In 1957, as a student, she worked as a translator with the Malagasy delegation at the VI International Festival of Youth and Students . In 1958-1960, researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies , in 1960-1964 - at the Institute of Africa of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1964-1974 - Editor, announcer of the USSR State Committee on Television and Radio Broadcasting (African edition). She independently learned the Malagasy (Malgash) language . In 1966 she defended her thesis for the degree of candidate of philological sciences ("Structure of the Malgash word"). In 1974 - 1992 - Lecturer at ISAA at Moscow State University , in 1994-1997 - University of Cape Town (South Africa) [1] . In 2005 and 2007, she taught translation from Russian to Malagasy and from Malagasy to Russian for undergraduates of the Russian Language Department at Antananarivo University.
Scientific and social activities
The main direction of scientific research is linguistics, literature, culture of Madagascar. She taught courses at ISAA: “Lexicology of the Malagasy language”, “Introduction to Malagasy philology”, “Grammar of the modern Malagasy language”, “History of the Malagasy language and the history of Malagasy linguistics”, etc. [2] She made several presentations at meetings of the Academy of Madagascar, conferences at the University, the Union of Poets and Writers of Madagascar on the topics: “Learning the Malagasy language in the Soviet Union” (75th anniversary of the Malagasy Academy of Sciences, 1977); “Principles of compiling dictionaries” (Department of Linguistics and Literature of the Malagasy Academy of Sciences, 1979); “Comparative analysis of the Malagasy and Russian fairy tales” (International colloquium on oral literature of Madagascar, 1980); “Madagascar in Russian Culture” (Colloquium “Diversity of Cultures and Development”, 2002); “The formation of knowledge and ideas about Madagascar in Russia” (Malagasy Academy of Sciences, 2005) and others. Her articles were published in the Bulletin of the Malagasy Academy of Sciences and periodicals. She has published more than 150 books and articles [3] .
In 2000, Lyudmila Alekseevna created the Club of Friends of Madagascar in Russia. The core of the Club consists of former students of the Institute of Asian and African Countries at Moscow State University, researchers from the Institute of Africa of the Russian Academy of Sciences, specialists in Malagasy history and philology, biology and geology, teachers, journalists, and diplomats. Under the guidance of Lyudmila Alekseevna, the Club publishes a series of books under the general title “In the Mysterious Country of Madagascar”. The fifth issue, dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the Malagasy Academy of Sciences, was compiled jointly with Malagasy scientists and was published in Russian (2014) and in French (2015) [4] .
