Nicolas Alexander "Nick" Velious ( born Nicholas Alexander "Nick" Veliotes ; born October 28, 1928 , Oakland , California , USA ) - American diplomat, US ambassador to Jordan (1978-1981) and Egypt (1983-1986), assistant US Secretary of State for Middle East and South Asia (1981-1983). Member of the American Academy of Diplomacy and Council on Foreign Relations .

Biography

Born into a family of Greek immigrants Alexander J. Veliotis, who worked as a porter at the naval base of Mar Island and owned a grocery store, and Irini Kiskakis, an artist by profession. He had a sister, Dorothy, and an older brother, Johnny Otis , a singer and musician, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .

In 1946-1948 he served in the US Army .

He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor's degree (1952) and a Master of Arts (1954). As a student, was fond of football and rugby.

Career

In 1955 he became a member of the US Diplomatic Service .

He served as a consular officer in Naples (1955-1957) and economic attache in Rome (1957-1960).

In 1962-1964 he worked in the Executive Secretariat (S / ES) and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) at the US State Department .

He served as political affairs officer in New Delhi (1964–1966) and Vientiane (1966–1969).

In 1970-1973 - Special Assistant to the Under -Secretary of State of the United States .

In 1973-1976 - Deputy Head of Mission in Tel Aviv .

In 1976-1977 - Deputy Head of the Department of Political Planning of the United States .

In 1977-1978 - Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East and South Asia.

In 1978-1981 - the US ambassador to Jordan.

In 1981-1983 - Assistant Secretary of State for the Affairs of the Middle East and South Asia.

In 1983-1986 - the US ambassador to Egypt.

In 1986, he became president of the Association of American Publishers (AAP), which he left in 1997, being the president of succession.

Member of the organizations of the Middle East Institute , the Foundation for the Middle East Peace , Veterans of Foreign Wars and others.

Winner of several prestigious awards and prizes.

Personal life

Married to wife Patricia Nolan has sons Michael and Christopher.
