The researcher who described a number of zoological taxa . The names of these taxa (to indicate authorship) are accompanied by the designation " FD Bennett " . |
In the years 1833-1836 he traveled around the world on the whaler Tuscan , paying special attention to Oceania . The goals were the study of whales , including for the needs of spermaceti , the survey of new and still not well-studied lands, and the pursuit of naturalism. The trip turned out to be a success, lasting 3 years and 24 days, and without human loss, which in those days was a rarity. Tuscan brought home 743 samples of dried plants and 233 prepared animals home to England, many of which were rare or previously unknown to science. After returning to his homeland, Bennett was engaged in medical practice.
Described a number of new taxa, for example, Remora australis , dumb gray tern, and Cheilopogon nigricans . F. D. Bennett is the author of Narrative of a Whaling Voyage Round the Globe, From the Year 1833 to 1836 ( London , 1840).
