Title

The place was named after an American businessman of Polish descent Christian Brevort Zabriski, vice president and general manager of Pacific Coast Borax. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the company carried out mining operations in the Death Valley. Sleds of twenty mules, attached to large wagons, transported the borax from the mines in Death Valley through the Mojave Desert to the nearest railroad, 165 miles (275 km) from the mines.

Geology

Millions of years before the actual flooding and expansion of the Death Valley, as well as the existence of Lake Manly, another lake occupied most of the Death Valley, including the Zabriskie Point area. This ancient lake began to form about nine million years ago. Over the course of several million years of the lake’s existence, sediments collected at the bottom in the form of salt mud , gravel formed as a result of the natural destruction of nearby mountains , and volcanic ash from the then active volcanic field of the Black Mountains . The climate of the area where the lake was located was dry, but not as dry as it is today. Camels , mastodons , horses , carnivores and birds left traces in the mud on the lake, along with fossil grasses and reeds . Borates , which made up most of the historical past of the Death Valley, formed in lake waters from thermal springs and changes in rhyolite in a nearby volcanic field. Weathering and thermal waters were also involved in the formation of the variety of colors of the area.

Gradually, the climate became more arid, which led to the complete drying of the lake and the creation of a dry lake . The subsequent expansion and sludge of the Death Valley, as well as the uplift of today's Black Mountains, led to a slope, which led to erosion, which gave rise to the badlands that we see today.
