History
The Kau area was known as the Moku ( haw. Moku ) of the ancient inhabitants of the island of Hawaii - one of the six original areas, or coastal sectors, under the leadership of the leaders.
The name comes from the Polynesian name “Ka-uu” (in Hawaiian legends known as ʻKaʻū kua makaniʻ). In Samoa, this name sounds “Ta-uu” (Taʻū), and in Micronesia - “Takuu” [1] .
Description
The area includes settlements and populated areas:
- South Point (Ka Lae)
- Hawaiian Ocean View Estates (HOVE)
- Hawaiian Ocean View Ranchos (HOVR), or Ocean View, Nīnole, Waiʻōhinu, Naʻālehu and Pāhala [2] .
Most of the area is occupied by the Hawaiian Volcanic National Park on the slopes of the Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes.
Major natural attractions include [3]
- Kau (desert)
beaches:
- Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach
- Mahana Beach (Mahana Beach; Papakōlea (Green Sand) Beach)
- Camilo (beach ).
- The southernmost point of the state of Hawaii and the USA. (South point).
It borders Pune (Hawaii) to the east, South Kona (Hawaii) and North Kona (Hawaii) to the west [4] .
Until 1996, sugarcane was the main crop. Nowadays, mountain coffee plantations and macadamia nuts are becoming increasingly important [5] .
A coffee festival is being held in the city of Pāhala [6] .
US South Point
The southernmost point in the USA is in this area.
This is conditionally the southernmost point of the country, since there is an even more southern American island of Palmyra , however, it has the status of the United States [7] .
Volcanism and earthquakes
Kau is located on the slopes of the active volcanoes Kilauea and Mauna Loa .
There are dangers:
- lava flooding (hazard zones USGS No. 1 and 2).
- earthquakes from volcanoes and land sliding into the ocean.
- constantly blowing winds ( trade winds ) bring volcanic gases and vogs with acid rain to the area .
On April 2, 1868, an earthquake of magnitude 7.25-7.75 on the Richter scale occurred on the southeastern coast of the island of Hawaii. It caused a landslide from Mauna Loa , 8 km north of , killing 31 people.
