Biography

Born in with. Balihorod (now part of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship of Poland). Born in 1931. Received primary education in his native village. World War II interrupted further education. After 1945 he became interested in medicine.

In 1953 he graduated from the Medical Academy in Lodz, receiving a doctoral degree in medicine. He worked in a surgical clinic. After that, he studied at the University of Silesia (Bitom). In 1961 he received a doctorate. For 4 years he was an adjunct and chairman of the surgical department of the 3rd surgical clinic at the Silesian Academy.

In 1965 he emigrated to the United States. He completed his specialization in General and Vascular Surgery at Livingston Medical Center, New Jersey. In 1966-1971 he was a resident and chief resident of general surgery at the Santa Barnabas Medical Center.

In 1971 he opened a private surgical practice in Newark (New Jersey). Since 1977, he was the initiator of the creation and head of the Bariatric Center at Irvington General Hospital for the surgical and dietary treatment of patients' excess hazards.

In 1982, Lubomir Kuzmak became the head of the surgical department of the Irvington General Hospital. In the early 1990s, he organized master classes for bariatric surgeons from Belgium, Italy and Australia.

Member of the Ukrainian Medical Society of North America in New York, the International College of Surgeons, the American Society of Bariatric Surgery, the Royal Academy of Medicine of Great Britain, and a number of medical societies. He was a member of the editorial board of the journal Obesity.

Together with his family he was a member of 371 departments of the Ukrainian People’s Union. He died in 2006 from pneumonia.

Scientific activity

He is one of the first surgeons to use a surgical reduction in gastric capacity to limit patient food intake. He began these operations in 1977. In 1983, he developed a silicone band for gastric banding, as well as a tool for cutting and calibrating a tube with electronic sensors for the size of the stomach. In 1986, he received a patent for his development.

He also became famous for the very convenient technique of adrenal gland surgery, using very small rifling that almost left no residue.

L. Kuzmak is the author of many professional works published in Ukrainian, American and Polish medical journals. In 1986, published the first results of operations of 212 patients on the stomach. In 1991, he published research results for 7 years.
