Early Years and Education

Born in 1945 in England. In the sixth grade of a high school, a math teacher noticed the boy’s outstanding abilities and suggested that he pass without preparation. Stuart agreed and took first place in the class. He received a scholarship to study at Cambridge , at Churchill College , where he studied mathematics and received a bachelor 's degree in art in this specialty. Then he entered the graduate school of Warwick University , where he received a Ph.D. in Lie algebras under the guidance of the famous mathematician (1969) [6] .

Scientific work

After defending his dissertation, he received the post of research fellow at the University of Warwick. He gained fame for his popular science articles in mathematics, as well as his contribution to catastrophe theory [7]

While working in Warwick, he edited the mathematical journal [8] . For ten years (from 1991 to 2001) he led the column "Mathematical Leisure" in the journal Scientific American . This was a continuation of the work of such well-known popularizers of mathematics as Martin Gardner , Douglas Hofstadter and . In total, Stuart wrote 96 columns, which were then reprinted as books.

He worked as a visiting professor in Germany (1974), New Zealand (1976) and the USA ( University of Connecticut 1977-78, ( University of Houston 1983-84).

He has published over 140 scientific papers, including a number of influential works in collaboration with the biologist on the application of the theory of oscillators and symmetry to the study of animal movement [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] .

In collaboration with biologist and writer Terry Pratchett, he wrote four non-fiction books about the Flat World of Pratchett. In 1999, Terry Pratchett awarded Stuart and Cohen the title of Honorary Wizard of the Unseen University. At the same ceremony, the University of Warwick awarded Terry Pratchett an honorary degree. Marked by the AAAS Public Engagement with Science Award (2001).

In March 2014, an iPad app , Incredible Numbers by Professor Ian Stewart, was released [15] .

Personal life

In 1970, he married his current wife Avril; they have two sons. He is fond of science fiction, painting , playing the guitar, breeding aquarium fish , geology, Egyptology and scuba diving .
