Referendum 2018 (Fr.)

The referendum on the independence of New Caledonia is a referendum which, according to the agreements between the government of France and the autonomous government of New Caledonia , was held on November 4, 2018 [1] [2] .

Voters decided whether New Caledonia would remain part of France or become an independent state. The turnout was 80% of almost 175 thousand registered voters who could vote in a referendum. About 17% of the island’s total voters were not eligible to vote in accordance with the 1998 Noumea Agreement. Mostly they were born in the metropolis and arrived in New Caledonia after 1994.

The French government has stated that it will recognize any referendum decision.

Most voters rejected the proposal for the independence of New Caledonia. [3] Despite the negative decision of the referendum, voters, according to the 1998 Agreement, have the opportunity to vote again for independence in 2020 and 2022, provided that at least a third of the local legislative assembly of the New Caledonia Congress makes such a decision [4] .
