Born under the name Israel Ber Yoshafat in the family of Rabbi Samuel Levi Yoshafat and his wife Betty, in a house on the corner of Druzelgass and Mittelgass streets in Kassel . Since 1840, he led publishing companies in Berlin and Paris , distributing translations from foreign periodicals. In 1845 he converted to Christianity in London , receiving the name Paul Julius. In the same year he married the daughter of the Berlin banker Magnus.
In 1848 he emigrated to Paris, where he got a job at the Telegraphic Agency of Havas (future France Presse ). He gained fame with operational reports of the revolutionary activity of that time , which were delivered at lightning speed by carrier pigeons between Aachen and Brussels . Then he moved to the City of London , where in 1851 he founded his own agency, reporting the latest news from the city exchange . In 1857, Reuters became a subject of the British crown.
In 1872, Nasser al-Din Shah concluded an unequal agreement with Reuters, according to which he transferred to him in concession almost all of the existing and future infrastructure and industry of Persia . Under pressure from Iranian patriots and the British government, the agreement was terminated, but in 1889 Reuters organized the Shahinshah Bank , which had a monopoly on lending activities in the country.
In 1871, Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha granted Reuters the title of Baron ( Freiherr ). Two decades later, Queen Victoria granted him the same title. Reuters died in his villa in Nice and was buried in south London. His daughter, Clementine Maria, married Earl Otton Stenbock , and after his death, the Governor of Queensland .
