Biography

Born in 1903. After graduating from the Moscow Mining Academy in 1928, N. M. Pokrovsky worked at the mine in Makeevka ( Donbass ) as the head of ventilation, and then as the head of the mechanization and capital works section.

In 1932, he transferred to teaching at the Moscow Mining Institute (today - the Mining Institute of NUST “MISiS” ). Since the 1940s N. M. Pokrovsky is a professor at the Department of Mining Construction, and since 1947, having replaced P. M. Tsimbarevich in this post, he has been appointed head of the Department of Mining and Mining (subsequently, Department of Construction of Underground Structures and Mines) ") [2] .

He was seriously interested in history, prepared a large research work, which he intended to submit to the academic council of the Historical Archival Institute [3] .

Died in 1991

Pedagogical and scientific activity

N. M. Pokrovsky created a school of mining engineers and mines, under his guidance and with direct participation, curricula and methodological documentation for the specialty "Construction of underground structures and mines" were developed.

He was the first to develop and create fundamental courses for conducting and securing mine workings, such as “Carrying out mine workings”, “Carrying out horizontal and inclined workings”, “Carrying out vertical mine shafts in the usual way”, “Construction and reconstruction of mine workings” in three volumes and “Designing complexes of underground workings”, which are the main textbooks for mining universities. Textbooks written by N. M. Pokrovsky have been translated into English, Chinese, Japanese, Bulgarian, and other languages. He prepared two candidates and four doctors of technical sciences.

Over the years, N. M. Pokrovsky successfully combined pedagogical activity with administrative, being the dean of the mining department, the vice-rector of the institute for academic and scientific work, acting as rector [4] . In addition, N. M. Pokrovsky headed the mine and mining construction section of the Gosstroy of the USSR , was a member of the technical councils of a number of ministries and institutes, was chairman of the editorial board of Nedra publishing house, and an active member of the editorial board of the mine construction magazine.

The scientific activity of N. M. Pokrovsky is widely known. He took part in the development of topical issues of mine construction, in particular, the construction of KMA mines, Krivoy Rog , deep mines - new buildings in Donbass , Kuzbass and other mining enterprises. He conducted research to optimize the driving cycle, taking into account the depth of the holes, the productivity of loading the rock and lifting, the height of the shuttering formwork, as well as the geological and technical conditions of construction. In 1942, he led a team of scientists created to carry out a major research work, “Restoration of mine workings,” which was approved and adopted by the technical department of the NKUP. Based on these studies, in 1943, the “Instruction for the restoration of vertical mine workings” was developed, which was the main regulatory document for the restoration of the mines of Donbass [5] .

Recognition

In 1939, in connection with the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the Mining Academy, he was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor [6] . For the development and preparation of the master plan for the restoration of the mines of Donbass, N. M. Pokrovsky was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the medal "For the restoration of coal mines of Donbass . "

In addition, N. M. Pokrovsky was awarded the second order of the Red Banner of Labor and many medals of the USSR. In 1964, he was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR .
