Biography

John Eduard Jacobstal was born on September 17, 1839 in Prussian Stargard (now Starogard Gdansk , Poland) [3] . He studied at the Danzig Academy of Arts and at the Berlin Construction Academy and then worked in the workshop of StΓΌrmer [4] .

In 1864 he traveled to France and Italy, in 1866 he successfully passed the exam for the title of architect in Berlin , in 1870-1871. participated in the construction of the β€œVictory Monument” in the German capital (according to the project of Strack) [4] [5] .

From 1868 to 1872, John Eduard Jacobstal worked as a teacher at the German Museum of Industry, and in 1870-1876. taught at the Berlin art school [4] .

Without interruption from teaching, in order to study architectural monuments, Jacobstal traveled to Denmark (1872), to England (1874), and to Italy (1875) [4] .

The most important of its buildings are railway stations in Metz, Strasbourg and Berlin ; but he made himself famous not so much with them as with the introduction of a rational system of teaching ornamentation to German art schools and the publication of the manual β€œ Grammar of Ornament ” (140 wall tables with explanatory text, 2nd ed. 1879) [4] .

John Edward Jacobstal died on January 1, 1902 in Charlottenburg .
