Biography
Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1940. She graduated from Hempfield School, then studied at the University of Pennsylvania, which she graduated in 1962 with a bachelor of arts. In 1964 she graduated from Harvard Business School, becoming one of the first women to graduate from this institution and receiving a master's degree in business administration.
In 1969, she became Assistant Vice President of Citibank . From 1971 to 1973, she was Assistant Chief of Staff to US President Richard Nixon. She worked in the Commission for the Safety of Consumers and Products until 1979.
From 1979 to 1992, she was on the board of Aetna , from 1979 to 1988 - Senior Fellow at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1980, she founded her own consulting company, Barbara Franklin Enterprises, from which Franklin was president and CEO. She also served on the board of directors of Dow Chemical , Westinghouse Electric , Stanley Black & Decker and Nordstrom . Twice served on the advisory board of the president of the United States on trade.
February 26, 1992 was proposed by President George W. Bush for the post of Minister of Commerce [2] . Her candidacy was approved by the country's Senate, and on February 27 Barbara was sworn in. During her leadership, the United States managed to increase the number of exported goods, primarily to Russia, China, Mexico and Japan. At her initiative, the sanctions imposed by the United States on China in June 1989 after the events in Tiananmen Square were lifted. After winning the presidential election of Bill Clinton, Barbara Franklin left her post.
After leaving the civil service, Barbara continued to work in the private sphere, was a member of the board of Aetna, Dow Chemical, AMP, Inc. At the same time, she was a member of the board of Guest Services, Inc. (1995-2002), JA Jones (1995-1998), MedImmune (1995-2007), Milacron (1996-2005), NASDAQ (1996-1997), Watson Wyatt (2000-2002), Aviron (2001-2002) and GenVec (2002-2007). She now heads her own consulting firm, Barbara Franklin Enterprises.
