History

Warsaw Mint (1816-1864)

The Polish uprising against the power of the Russian Empire, began on November 29, 1830 and swept Poland, Belarus and Lithuania. During the uprising of 1830-1831, the National Government decided to issue its own money.

Gold coins of the Polish uprising of 1830-1831 were minted in 1831 by decree of the provisional Polish government at the Warsaw Mint. Despite the absence of Russian paraphernalia, they now belong to collectors on Russian subjects. In the fall of 1831, the leadership of the uprising, after its defeat, stopped the release of these coins.

The ducats of the Polish uprising in general imitated the Dutch ducats, called the rebellious ducat. The ducat of 1831, minted at the Warsaw Mint, differed from the Dutch ducat by the presence of an eagle to the right of the head of the knight. After the defeat of the uprising, “rebellious” coins were circulated in the Kingdom of Poland until July 1, 1838. In total, coins (except ducats) for 2.1 million zlotys were issued, and 1 million zlotys were withdrawn and smelted. The short circulation of “rebellious” coins led to a slightly higher degree of their preservation, in comparison with Russian-Polish coins of the same denominations that were in monetary circulation of the Polish provinces until 1891.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the coin is a figure of a standing knight in armor with a raised sword in his right hand and arrows in his left hand. The numbers 18 and 31 are shown on its two sides. In front of the knight is a small image of an eagle. The inscription “CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT” is made around the coin perimeter / A burning torch is depicted near the sword.

Varieties include the presence of a dot in front of the torch, behind it or without a dot.

Reverse

On the reverse of the coin in a square frame the inscription “MO.AVAR. / REG.BELGII / AD LEGEM / IMPERII. " Behind the frame is an ornament with sockets [4] .
