Biography

Andrei Vladimirovich Rimsky-Korsakov was the grandson of the Russian composer N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and a representative of the old noble family of Rimsky-Korsakov . Born on August 29, 1910 in St. Petersburg [1] [2] . Her father, Vladimir Nikolaevich , had a double college degree, his mother, Olga Artemyevna Gilyanova, was a graduate of the Smolny Institute . In the family, it was customary to speak French [1] [3] .

Andrei Vladimirovich received an excellent education, he studied at the German general education school and at the same time at music schools, then at the Leningrad Conservatory and the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute .

The combination of music education with the knowledge of technical sciences has created a favorable basis for the success of Andrei Vladimirovich (since 1932) at the Research Institute of the music industry, which was organized on the initiative of Academician NN Andreev . During this period, Rimsky-Korsakov, together with A. A. Ivanov, V. L. Kreutzer, and V. P. Dzerzhkovich, built one of the USSR ’s first electromusical instruments, the Emiriton (also known as melodin; the first model was released in 1935, the eighth - in 1950) [1] [4] . As the head of the laboratory of stringed musical instruments, Rimsky-Korsakov researched sound formation in keyboards , plucked and stringed musical instruments.

In 1940 he defended his thesis in the field of the theory of vibrations of strings and decks of musical instruments.

Shortly before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Andrei Vladimirovich went to work at the Leningrad Physical-Technical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences , where he was working on the problems of hydroacoustics . In early 1942, he was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Navy , where he was engaged in the development and testing of mine acoustic weapons. After demobilization, he returned to academic studies in the field of musical acoustics.

From 1946, his systematic pedagogical activity began: first as an associate professor at the Department of Radio Broadcasting and Acoustics at the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute of Communications , then as the head of the same department and dean of the radio engineering faculty. In 1950, Andrei Vladimirovich defended his doctoral dissertation and was awarded the title of professor .

In 1955, Andrei Vladimirovich moved to Moscow and became the head of the department created by him at the Acoustic Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where extensive research was conducted in the field of noise and vibration of complex mechanical structures, aeroacoustics and hydroacoustics.

The works of A. V. Rimsky-Korsakov and his staff in the field of physics of noise generation by gas jets and streams flowing around obstacles made it possible to reveal many new mechanisms for the formation of vortex sound and sound of rotation of axial fan blades and paddle wheels and to give recommendations on the design of low-noise turbochargers and centrifugal fans .

In 1960, Andrei Vladimirovich organized the Department of Electroacoustics and Ultrasonic Engineering at the Moscow Mining Institute (today the Mining Institute of NITU "MISiS" ) and began to teach electroacoustics, acoustic measurements and techniques to combat noise and vibrations. At the Department of Electroacoustics under his leadership, research on the use of low-frequency acoustic oscillations for the intensification of technological processes.

Since 1965, Andrei Vladimirovich began teaching at the Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering, Electronics and Automation at the rate of electroacoustics. He also wrote a monograph entitled “Electroacoustics”, published a problem book for this course and set up a laboratory practice [1] .

In 1985 he became the winner of the State Prize of the USSR in the field of science and technology [5] .

He was a consultant to a number of Soviet musical instrument factories.

Rimsky-Korsakov is the author of more than 100 scientific works, including nine monographs on the main issues of acoustics. Had more than 50 copyright certificates. He prepared twenty candidates of science and two doctors of science. He made presentations at international scientific conferences in Moscow, Tokyo , Budapest , Madrid , and London . Represented the USSR in the International Electrotechnical Commission as secretary of the Ultrasound subcommittee and also in the International Commission on Acoustics.

For scientific achievements was awarded the Order " Badge of Honor " and the Red Banner of Labor , as well as various medals.

He died in 2002 [1] .
