Born April 13, 1839 in the vicinity of Paris . In 1856, when he was 17 years old, he joined the army and served in Algeria for 4 years. There he studied French boxing and participated in competitions. In 1860, Joseph after successful passing the exam became a non-commissioned officer, moving to the reserve, returned to Paris and continued the practice of French boxing. In 1862, Charlemont went on a trip to European countries, challenging all the famous English boxers, fencers and other hand-to-hand combat masters, not knowing the defeats. In 1866, Hubert Lekur himself had already called him to a duel, but even he was not able to defeat Joseph. Then Charlemont took part in the revolutionary uprising (Paris Commune of March 18 - May 28, 1871), but it failed and Joseph hid in Belgium. There he arranged fights with personal participation in front of the audience, taught boxing to everyone, and in 1877 opened the first French boxing club outside of France. At the same time, Joseph completed the development of his system, which he published in a treatise. In 1879, after an amnesty, he was allowed to return to Paris. On October 2, 1887, he founded his famous French Boxing Academy. Since that time, French boxing has become a source of his income, because he trained only representatives of high society. Perhaps, sometimes Charlemont took in the students and the poor, but only very talented, who could then bring him profit. Joseph was in excellent physical shape even in adulthood. He spent his last fight at the age of 57 with the master of the classical savat M. Zhin and won. This was published in the newspaper Midi-Sport. In 1899, his son Charles became the head of the academy, and his father, out of “kindness of mind,” set a high rent for his son. Further, Joseph continued to teach rich boxers at home in French boxing. Joseph died before the age of 91.
