History

The grand opening of the monument to the sculptures of Mikhail Belashov and Ekaterina Alekseeva-Belashova took place a year after the death of the hero pilot - November 17, 1940 [1] .

Here is how the Stalingradskaya Pravda newspaper of November 19, 1940 described this event:

Numerous streams of people flocked to factories, plants, and institutions. Alleles of the banner and banner. Lined with columns, the Stalingraders headed towards the Volga , where a massive monument to the national hero Viktor Stepanovich Khuslyanov stands under a blanket. 12 a.m. The square, the embankment, the square of the Palace of Pioneers and the surrounding streets are filled with working people of the city, fighters of the Red Army , cadets of the aviation school, students and students ... The leaders of party and Soviet organizations of the region and the city rise to the podium. Among them are deputies of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR vol. Chuyanov , Zimenkov , Pigalev , Polyakov and the commission of the Main Directorate of the Air Force of the Red Army - Hero of the Soviet Union, major general of aviation, comrade Khuslyanov, comrade Kopec . Just six months after the opening of the monument, the Great Patriotic War began . During the Battle of Stalingrad, fierce battles were fought on the embankment and the monument was at their epicenter. During the battles, the pedestal was destroyed, but the sculpture that fell to the ground practically did not suffer. After the liberation of the city, it was picked up and put on the ground next to the destroyed pedestal [1] [2] .

After the victory, the monument was completely restored to its former place. In 1949, the monument was put on a modern pedestal, and the figure of the hero pilot was turned. Before the war, the sculpture stood chest to Lenin Street and looked towards the Tsaritsa River. After reconstruction, the sculpture was unfurled facing the city, and its back to the Volga. This version of the orientation of the figure of the pilot, looking towards Lenin Street, was worked out initially, but was rejected [1] . The author of the monument Mikhail Belashov specifically wrote about this in 1940:

A strong turn of the head takes Khodzhenov’s face out of the shadow, which would inevitably hide his face from the viewer if he looked directly from the Volga, and not along its shore. [one]

According to the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR No. 624 of December 4, 1974, the monument was included in the list of cultural monuments to be protected as a monument of national importance.

At the end of 2014, within the framework of the federal target program for preparing for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the monument was overhauled. The contractor for restoration works, the Moscow-based Restoration Center organization [3] cleaned the surface of dirt and corrosion, applied a new coating to the sculpture and pedestal, and also ennobled the area around the monument. In total, 8 million rubles [4] [5] were spent on restoration work.

In Volgograd, a bust of the pilot was also installed. It is located in the Voroshilov district opposite the building of the DOSAAF school [6] .

Monument Description

At the moment, the monument is a bronze sculpture 3.85 m high mounted on a granite pedestal, the height of which is 4.5 m. The inscription is written on the pedestal with false bronze letters: "Hero of the Soviet Union Commander Viktor Stepanovich Khzulunov. 1905-1939. ” [7] .

The sculpture is a standing pilot in a leather coat and boots. A helmet is put on his head, sunglasses on his forehead, a tablet on his belt is put on his shoulder, a holster for the pistol is on his belt. A glove removed from the right hand, the pilot holds in his left hand. The right hand is stretched out behind the back, fingers are clenched into a fist, and the index is directed downward.

Here is how the sculptor Mikhail Belashov described the monument after the opening:

V.S. Khulzunov is depicted in a sculpture at the time of making a combat speech-call in front of the aircraft formation of the unit entrusted to him, when he called to bring down enemy planes to the ground and save the people of the territory protected by him. Studying the area around the monument, we came to the conclusion that the monument should be solved very strictly in silhouette, so that the content of the figure was very clearly read at any distance. We consider Lenin Street to be the best observation point of the monument, from where the entire structure, gradually growing from behind a paved path, rises into the air, emphasizing the rapid temperamental movement of a combat pilot. The size of the figure along with the bronze square of the plinth 3 meters 85 centimeters. The pedestal was made of Karelian granite ... The very signature of the β€œStalin Falcon” was divided into two parts, lifted up, closer to the figure, the rest of the inscription was lowered closer to the viewer, giving it a strict laconic form. On the pedestal are three high reliefs, which are essentially a continuation of each other. The right side depicts the interaction of the Red Army with aviation ...
