Features
Most of the information about the complex is classified , but according to experts, it supposedly performs the tasks of air defense and missile defense [1] [3] . According to the director of the Center for the Analysis of the World Arms Trade, military expert Igor Korotchenko , the Peresvet combat laser can be successfully used in the fight against drones . Moreover, its effectiveness directly depends on environmental conditions; in fine weather, it works perfectly, but fog, rain, snow and other adverse weather events can interfere with the passage of the laser beam. The expert also added that such installations consume a lot of electricity, so it is unlikely to use them as a portable tool; but in the future they will be able to protect many military bases and other objects from the penetration of unmanned drones into their territory [4] .
The principle of operation is based on laser irradiation of optical reconnaissance systems, including reconnaissance satellites . It can be used in particular for covering (masking) the launch position of ICBMs . Work is underway to increase the compactness and mobility of the complex [5] . The complex includes the laser system itself and support machines, including those with power sources.
History
Announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a message to the Federal Assembly on March 1, 2018. [6]
The equipment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation began in 2017. On December 1, 2018, the Peresvet laser systems took up pilot combat duty [7] [8] .
Project Ratings
12/6 . The 2018 edition of We Are The Mighty published an article in which journalist Logan Nye, who drew attention to the wide media coverage of the Peresvet complex [9] [10] after the publication of the Sputnik news agency [11] , accused Russia of lying about new technologies, pointing out that there was no demonstration of the operation of the complex. [12] Nye expressed the view that there is no reason to doubt Russia's ability to develop such weapons, and also urged not to succumb to panic . [13]
Criticism
10/19 . In 2018, military expert Igor Korotchenko said that laser weapons , in particular the Peresvet complex, effectively work against UAVs only "when there is no fog , no sand storm , no precipitation , that is, in ideal conditions." [4] [14]
