Distribution
Europe ( Alps , Balkans , Carpathians , Pyrenees ; mountain meadows at heights of 1-2 km), the Caucasus. Austria , Spain , Italy , France , Germany , Russia , Romania , Switzerland , Finland , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Ukraine [3] [4] [5] [6] .
Description
Length about 2 cm (workers and males are smaller, and the uterus is larger). The length of the uterus is 20–26 mm, the length of the working individuals is 15–17 mm, and the males are 16–18 mm. The head is elongated with a very long proboscis. The color of hairs of pubescence varies from pale brown to brown-red. The front of the abdomen is covered with black hairs, while the back of the abdomen is covered with white hairs, except for the last segment of the abdomen, also covered with black hairs. Families include between 20 and 100 bumblebees. Underground nests. Oligolects prefer to visit plants of the Ranunculaceae family , mainly from the genus Aconitum (aconite Aconitum tycoctonum ) [4] [7] [8] [5] [6] . As far back as 1886, a well-known specialist in hymenopteran insects, the Austrian professor Dalla Torre (1886) noted that proboscis females reach a proboscis length of 18–21 mm, while males and workers have a proboscis length of only 11–12 mm [9] .
Systematics
Included in the subgenus Megabombus . The species was first described in 1881 by the Russian entomologist Ferdinand Ferdinandovich Moravitz (1827–1896) and named after the German zoologist and entomologist Karl Eduard Adolf Gershtecker (1828–1895) [10] [11] .
