Biography

Edward Hughes, the son of the artist George Hughes (George Hughes), was born on September 4, 1832 in the district of Pentonville, London . From childhood, the boy showed artistic ability in painting. In 1846, he entered the Royal Academy of Arts, and a year later he was awarded the silver medal of the Royal Society of Arts for paintings painted with pastels [4] . From 1847 to 1884, Hughes presented 36 of his paintings for review at the Royal Academy of Arts [5] .

Edward Hughes also worked as an illustrator of books, collaborated with French-British cartoonist Georges du Maurier in creating illustrations for Wilkie Collins ’s book Poor Miss Finch [6] . From 1878, he became involved in mainly portrait painting, which was highly appreciated by John Everett Millet , an English artist, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood .

Edward Hughes was married twice, died May 14, 1908. Buried at Highgate Cemetery in London. His eldest daughter and biographer Alice Hughes became a famous portrait photographer [7] .

Creativity

Edward Hughes is known mainly for his portraits. His brush belongs to, among other things, a portrait of Queen Maria Texca , wife of George V. This picture is exhibited in the lobby of Buckingham Palace [8] .

The artist painted at least three portraits of Queen Alexandra ; portraits of Louise of Great Britain, Duchess of Fife - the eldest daughter of King Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark; Princess of the United Kingdom of Victoria ; Queen of Norway; a member of the British royal family, granddaughter of King George III - Maria Adelaide of Cambridge ; Prince of Wales (future King George V ); his brother, Prince Albert and his sister Princess Mary. Some of his paintings are currently kept in the Royal Collection.
