He was educated at the University of Alabama . He worked as a prosecutor in the city of Tuscaloosa ( 1963 - 1971 ), a US magistrate in the Northern District of Alabama ( 1966 - 1970 ) and a special assistant to the Attorney General of Alabama ( 1969 - 1971 ). In 1970 , he was elected a member of the Alabama Senate .
