Biography
Grandson of the Polish composer, pianist Vladislav Marcian Zhelensky (1837-1921). The nephew of the journalist, critic and writer Tadeusz Boya Zhelensky (1874-1941), who was shot by the Nazis in Lviv in July 1941, together with a group of Polish university teachers.
He studied at the gymnasium of Krakow. At age 11, he lost his father Stanislav Zhelensky, who died from a mortal wound in one of the battles during the First World War, being an adjutant to General Tadeusz Rozvadovsky .
He entered the Faculty of Law at the University of Warsaw and moved to the city. For some time he lived with Uncle Tadeusz, where he met Jerzy Gedrojec , with whom they became like-minded in the “Ukrainian issue”. He combined his studies with part-time jobs.
For almost 50 years, he investigated the case of "Lviv professors." Thanks to him, the involvement of Ukrainians from the Nachtigall battalion was once again proved. He created his own "Zhelensky Archive", part of which is located at the General Sikorski Institute in London, and the other in the Archive of New Acts in Warsaw.
He took an active part in the work of the Polish-Ukrainian society created in Paris in June 1976, and since December 1980 led it.
In December 1979 he participated in the Ukrainian-Polish conference on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the OUN. In Munich, met with an OUN activist and scientist Vladimir Yanovim ; according to the latter, had a desire to work for the future.
A joint Ukrainian-Polish funeral service was initiated in the Polish church of Paris, on the occasion of the death of the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church - Cardinal Joseph Slipy . He supported the Greek Catholics, was a supporter of the creation of the patriarchate of the UGCC.
In a letter to the well-known activist of the Ukrainian women's movement Milena Rudnitskaya, who supported him, he said:
| Our peoples ... are located close to their neighbors, have the same goals: freedom and independence, should be united by friendship and mutual respect .... The road to this leads through finding a common moral language and the same ethical position. |
He died in Paris at the age of 103 years. He was buried in the church, in which a joint prayer service was held for Poles and Ukrainians for the repose of the soul of Joseph the Blind ...
He was buried in the Polish cemetery of Le Champot in Montmorency .
