Biography
Asta Nerregor was born on August 13, 1853 in Christiania (now the city of Oslo), Norway . She was the daughter of infantry captain Hans Peter Nørregaard (Hans Peter Nørregaard, 1818–1872) and Eliza Jacobine Hesselberg (1821–1853). Asta and her older sister were orphaned early, both also remained unmarried. Asta Nerregor received her art education at the Knud Bergslin School of Painting, and another Norwegian artist, Harriet Bakker , also studied there. In the years 1875-1878, Asta Nerregaard studied painting in Munich with the artist Eilif Petersen .
In 1878 she returned to her homeland and studied for two years in Oslo, and in 1979 she was educated in Paris from a scholarship from the Schaeffer Foundation. She studied in Paris from 1879 to 1884. In Paris, she met with different directions in painting - with realism, painting on the open plan and impressionism. During her life in Paris, she created impressionist paintings, “Interior of the Music Salon” (1885), and the religious painting “Waiting for Christ” (L'attente de Christ), which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1881.
After returning to Oslo in 1885, she was engaged in portraiture. She painted portraits of Norwegian theologians Jisle Christian Johnson (1885, Gisle Christian Johnson 1822–1894) and Carl Paul Caspari (Carl Paul Caspari, 1814–1892) on commission. In 1885, she created a portrait of 22-year-old Edward Munch , who was the first portrait of the artist.
In 1887-1889, the artist traveled to Italy and France, painted genre paintings, impressionist landscapes, and figurative compositions: “Woman Reading at the Window” (1888, Lesende dame ved vindu), “Angelo” (1888, Angelo), “Midnight Mass in a French monastery ”(1888-89, Midnattsmesse i et fransk kloster)“ The wife of a farmer from Normandy ”(1887-89, Bondekone fra Normandie).
From 1890 to 1905, she painted mainly portraits of government officials, scientists and politicians, etc. In total, Nørregor painted about 300 full-size portraits.
In 1911, she at her own expense compiled and published a four-volume illustrated catalog of her works “Portraits”. The catalog includes 116 portraits, of which 70 are pastel. The most significant portraits of the artist include portraits of Christian Birkeland and Martina Kappelen Hort (1897), portraits of Thomas and Elizabeth Firnli (1892), Harald Loewenskold (1905), Nils and Maria Andresen Butensken (1900, 1904), written several times.
A feature of the artist's works was that, for pomp and in recognition of masculinity and respect, she painted male portraits with oil paint, and painted female and children's portraits in pastel. In her opinion, pastel colors make it possible to show the purity, femininity and childlike immediacy of the depicted. The portrait gallery created by the artist became a collective portrait of the elite of Norwegian society at the turn of the 20th century.
Asta Norregor died on March 23, 1933 at the age of 79.

She painted landscapes, interiors, portraits of famous Norwegian politicians, scientists, writers, artists, teachers; in 1882 it was decorated with the altar of the church of Gyovik.
