Alessandro Algardi ( Italian: Alessandro Algardi , July 31, 1598 , Bologna - June 10, 1654 , Rome ) - Italian sculptor , the largest representative of the Baroque in Italian sculpture along with Bernini .

Biography

He began working in the workshop of Lodovico Carracci [1] . In 1608 he entered the service of the Duke of Mantua Ferdinando Gonzaga . Then he moved to Venice , and in 1625 to Rome. He worked in the church of San Silvestro , Santa Maria del Popolo , St. Peter's Basilica , the Palazzo dei Conservatory . Vied with Bernini.

He enjoyed the patronage of Pope Innocent X , designed for him the villa of Pamphili . He was close to Domenichino , was friends with Francois Duquenois , Andrea Sacchi , Nicola Poussin , shared their orientation to the classical norm in the framework of Baroque style. He also worked as a restorer. Algardi was also known for his portrait work [2] . In 1650 he met Velazquez , moved to Spain . He worked in Aranjuez and Salamanca .
