Irkutsk State University

Irkutsk State University was founded on October 27, 1918 by the Siberian Provisional Government . The founder of the university and the first rector is the philosopher and teacher Professor M. M. Rubinstein . The first faculties: historical, philological and legal . After a series of reorganizations in the 1920s, in 1930, the university was disbanded, and in the fall of 1931, it reopened as East Siberian University ^[2] . It consists of three departments: chemical, soil-geographical and physical ; at the same time, the lecture form of classes was resumed, and in May 1933 the faculty system was restored. A recruitment was carried out at 4 faculties: physical and mathematical, biological, chemical, geological, soil-geographical; Faculty of Humanities was restored in 1940. Thus, since the 1930s, natural science specialties have become priorities at the university.

Since 1925, the university has taught various specialties and conducted research internships for foreign citizens from Mongolia , China , African and Arab countries.

ISU is known for its fundamental research, including in the field of ecology (Lake Baikal is located in the region). Since 1997, ISU has its own official website.

In Soviet times (1939–1989), ISU bore the name of A. A. Zhdanov .

In 2006, the university successfully passed the state certification and accreditation. At that time, about 18 thousand students were studying at ISU. Since 2006, university students have the opportunity to receive a scholarship "Oxford Russia Fund" . The university has a scientific library, which includes more than 2000 names of sources. The university has branches in Angarsk and Bratsk .

At the moment, 7 dissertation councils and 8 large scientific divisions (REC Baikal, Center for New Information Technologies (CNIT), Astronomical Observatory, Interregional Institute of Social Sciences (BINES), Botanical Garden , Mongolian Research and Information Center (NICIMO) work at ISU. , Research Institute of Applied Physics (NIIPF), Research Institute of Biology (NIIB), etc.). From November 25 to 30, 2008, events dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the university were held in Irkutsk State University ^[3] .

On November 16, 2012, a conference of the university's labor collective for the election of the rector was held, at which Alexander Valerievich Arguchintsev was elected by a majority rector ^[4] .
