The early years
Lin-Manuel Miranda was born in New York in the family of a psychologist and adviser to the mayor of New York . The family had Puerto Rican roots [3] . From childhood, the future owner of Pulitzer was accustomed to music in the house, especially to the sounds of Broadway musicals [4] . He studied at primary and secondary schools of Hunter College , after which he entered Wesleyan University [5] .
First Successes
In 1999, in her second year at the Miranda University, she wrote the first test version of her future hit “ On the Heights ”. During work, he included hip-hop numbers and salsa rhythms that conveyed the character's character. His musical is accepted for staging at the student theater, where he broke the box office record for the year. After that, during his training, Miranda staged several more musicals, and also played in a wide range - from musical productions to Shakespeare's plays. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 2002. [3]
Immediately after that, he teams up with former fellow students journalist John Buffalo Mailer and director Thomas Kyle and begins to recycle “ On the Heights ”. The performance went through at least five preliminary readings [3] before it was staged at the 37 Arts off-Broadway theater. The performance ran from January to July 2008 and became the absolute triumph of the Outer Critics Circle Award , and also won two Drama Desk awards and one Obie . For himself, Lin-Manuel Miranda won the Theater World Award (the award is given for the best debut on the Broadway or off-Broadway stage). This ensured the performance of the Broadway start in 2008, which took place at the Richard Rogers Theater [6] . The production was nominated for 13 Tony awards and won 4 of them, including Best Musical and Best Screenplay. Miranda was nominated for Best Actor in a Musical. In 2009, Miranda won a Grammy for Best Album at the Musical Theater [7] .
" On the heights " was not the only project of Miranda at that time. In 2007, he appeared as a guest star in an episode of the television series " The Soprano Clan " [8] . In 2009 and 2010, he can be seen in two episodes of the sixth season of the television series Doctor House - Broken and Baggage . Also in 2009, he works closely with Stephen Sondheim and writes Spanish texts for the restored production of West Side Story on Broadway [9] [10] .
Further career
In 2011, Miranda, together with Tom Kitt and Amanda Green, wrote the musical “Achieve Success”. The performance went on a limited show on Broadway in 2012 [11] , and was subsequently nominated for a Tony for best new musical and best choreography [12] .
In 2011, Miranda appears in an episode of the television series " American Family ", in 2013 she gets a supporting role in the quickly removed from the air of the series " Do no harm ." Also in 2013, Miranda as a guest star can be seen in the episode "Bedtime Stories" of the sitcom " How I Met Your Mother " [13] .
In March 2014, Disney hires Miranda and Mark Manchin to write songs for the upcoming 2016 Moana cartoon. For two and a half years, the authors of words and music created the soundtrack for the cartoon about the Polynesian girl. Miranda did not plan to record for the disc, but his demo version of the song We Know the Way entered the final soundtrack [2] .
Hamilton - American Musical
In 2008, while on vacation in Mexico , Lin-Manuel Miranda read a biography of Ron Chernov, one of the founding fathers of Alexander Hamilton . The book inspired the composer so much that he wrote rap and read it on May 12, 2009 at the White House Poetry Evening, where he was invited to perform “with any old song if he has nothing new” [14] . Later, the song "Alexander Hamilton" became the opening number of the Broadway super hit. Miranda said that he wrote the song “ My Shot ” ( Russian. My chance ) for over a year, rewriting the text to pay tribute to Hamilton’s intellect. Miranda personally wrote all the text and music, and also decided to play the title role, although for some time he was inclined to the role of Aaron Burr [15] .
Hamilton opened at the off-Broadway Public Theater in January 2015, staged by Thomas Cale. The musical received positive reviews, the show was sold until the very end. [16] Chernov and Miranda received a Creators Award from the New York Historical Society for their work on the musical. [17] Broadway previews began at the Richard Rogers Theater in July 2015, and premiered on August 6 [18] .
In March 2016, the Hamilton troupe was invited to the White House, where Miranda did not rap anymore, but with Barack Obama . [19] At the 70th Tony Prize , Hamilton brought Miranda three more awards: for best new musical , for best original script and for best musical libretto. For his performance, Miranda was also nominated as the best actor in the musical, but lost to Leslie One-Jr., who played the role of Burr [20] . On July 9, 2016, Lin-Manuel played a major role on Broadway for the last time [21] .
After Hamilton's Success
In 2015, Miranda became one of the composers of the soundtrack to the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens , writing a song that sounds in Maz Kanata Castle [22] . In April 2016, at John Oliver 's evening talk show, he read a fiery rape calling for Puerto Rico's debt restructuring.
In 2016, Moana was released, and Miranda’s music received positive reviews from critics [23] [24] [25] . The composer himself receives nominations for a Grammy , Critics' Choice Movie Awards , Golden Globe and Oscar for the song " How Far I'll Go " [26] [27] [28] [29] .
In 2017, Lin-Manuel Miranda received an Emmy nomination for guest appearance on the Saturday Night Live comedy show in October 2016. [30] Also in July 2017, composer Alan Mencken announced that he, along with Miranda, had begun work on songs for the cinematic remake of The Little Mermaid [31] .
In March 2018, it was announced that Lin-Manuel Miranda would play the adventurer Lee Scorsby in a television adaptation of Dark Beginnings by Philip Pullman . Filming began in July 2018. [32] In December 2018, Rob Marshall ’s film “ Mary Poppins Returns ” was released, where Miranda plays one of the main roles - Jack Lantern, in the company of stars such as Emily Blunt (Mary), Colin Firth and Angela Lansbury [33] .
Filming of the adaptation of "On the Heights" , which has been under development since 2008, began in June 2019. Miranda, who had previously reported that he would not play the role of Usnavi, but could appear as another character, would play Piragua Merchant. [34] [35]
