History

Baseball in Aguascalientes

Baseball in the city appeared at the beginning of the 20th century during the construction of the railway. In March 1902, the first game took place between teams of Mexican and American workers. Sport began to gain popularity among the locals, and in 1903, Antioco Ramirez organized the Caldereros 1903 team. At the end of the first decade of the 20th century, the first stadium, Arboledas, was built on the site of the old railway workshops [1] .

In the early 1930s, the National Baseball League was founded. A new stadium was built in the city - β€œEl Parque Obrero”, where one of the first Mexican professional baseball players Tirso de Anda and Alberto Romo Chavez played. The stadium burned down on June 24, 1945, but baseball continued to play at the same place, having equipped seating for spectators [1] .

In 1946, the local team joined the Central League. At the same time, the Parque Aguascalientes stadium was opened, which is now the Rieleros home arena and bears the name of Alberto Romo Chavez. In the season of 1946, the team of Tuneros de San Luis held several games in Aguascalientes, which helped to attract spectators to the stands. The stars of the team at the time were Alberto Chavez, Francisco Romo and Salvador Prado. The club played in the Central League in 1946, 1947, 1951 and 1952. In 1953, the Mexican League was founded, in which the team did not enter [1] .

Modern team

Baseball returned to the city in 1975 when RaΓΊl Medina Reyes and Pedro Barbosa established a new team. They organized the sale of shares of the team, so they managed to get additional funds. The club was named Rieleros in honor of the workers of the railroads who brought baseball to the city [1] .

In 1978, the team won the championship for the first time in its history, beating Algodoneros de Union Laguna in the final series in five games. The team leader was pitcher , who had previously appeared in Major League Baseball and became World Series champion in Oakland Athletics . Pigna won the 21st victory in 4 defeats, his transmittance ERA was 1.94. In the same season he played the perfect game . The attack played well too - in five players the beat rate exceeded 30% [2] .

In 2012, the team reached the final of the playoffs for the second time in history, in which Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz lost in seven games [3] .
