Zongo is a city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ( South Ubangi Province, formerly Equatorial Province ). Located on the Ubangi River , opposite Bangui , the capital of the Central African Republic (CAR). The two cities are connected by ferry, but the logistic value of Zongo has fallen since the late 1980s, when traffic flow shifted east. The population is 53,743 people. Towards the end of the First Congolese War, Zongo was controlled by rebels from the Congo Liberation Movement . At the beginning of the XXI century, the city repeatedly received refugees from the Central African Republic. The last episode was related to the internal conflict in this country, which is often called the Civil War . Among the refugees were many members of the family of the runaway CAR president Francois Bozize , whose capital was captured by members of the Muslim movement Séléka on March 24, 2013 [1] .
