Biography

Born in Pendleton , Salford , Lancashire . He was the youngest child in the family of Robert Valentine, Sr., who served in the ranks of the Navy, and Anne Wallywork [1] . His older brother, (1866-1904) was a rugby player and legend of the Swinton club. Their Robert Valentine Sr. died in 1884, when Robert Jr. was 6 years old, after which Robert lived with his brother Jim [2] .

Robert was a rugby player and, like his brother, played for the club. In May 1903, he signed a contract with the local football club Manchester United , initially as a defender. [3] He made his debut in the main squad on March 25, 1905 in a match against Blackpool at Bloomfield Road as a goalkeeper , keeping his goal “dry” [4] . The main goalkeeper of the team at that time was Harry Moger , so in the remainder of the 1904/05 season he played only one match for the team in the last game of the season against the same Blackpool, but at the United home stadium [5] .

In the 1905/06 season, he continued to be the second goalkeeper of the team, playing in 8 matches. At the end of the season, Manchester United took second place in the Second Division and entered the First Division of the Football League .

In 1907, Valentine resumed his rugby career, returning to the Swinton Lions [6] .

He died at the Salford Royal Hospital in January 1926 [7] .
