Biography
The illegitimate son of a peasant woman I.F. Starshinova, Mikhail Mikhailovich Kurbatov was born on November 16, 1905 in the village. Sheikhrany of Tsivilsk Uyezd (now Kanash , Chuvashia). In 1910 he was adopted by a local merchant M.N. Kurbatov. According to other sources: Mikhail's father, Mikhail Nikolayevich, a native of the Kurbatovs merchant family, engaged in grain trade and living in Shikhrany, in 1910 married the mother of his children, Irina Fyodorovna Starshinova, a peasant from the village of Ivanovo of Tsivilsky Uyezd [2] [3] .
In 1914-1918, Mikhail Mikhailovich was a student in an elementary school in Kazan, received his secondary education at the second-degree Civil school (1918-1921), then at the fifth Kazan gymnasium [4] , according to other sources: at secondary school No. 4, Kazan (1921-1923) [1] .
While living in Kazan, he worked as an instructor in the pre-conscription training department of the military registration and enlistment office of the Tatar Republic (1921-1922), a telephone operator at the Office of the Chief of Artillery of the 1st Infantry Division (1922) [1] .
In 1922-1924 he studied double bass at the Kazan Oriental College of Music (now the Kazan College of Music (School) named after I.V. Aukhadeev ). In the 1923/1924 season, he served as the musician-bass player at the Kazan Theater (now the Tatar Academic State Opera and Ballet Theater named after Musa Jalil ) [1] .
In 1924 he entered and in 1930 graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory (now the St. Petersburg Conservatory named after N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov ). He studied the double bass class (teacher S. N. Buyanovsky ) [4] . During training, he participated as an orchestra in productions of the Opera Studio of the Conservatory and in symphony concerts. He worked in the orchestras of the Red Theater (now the Baltic House Theater-Festival ) (1924-1925), in the cinemas of the Sovkino Trust - Forum and others (1925-1930) [1] .
A year before graduation, he participated in a competition for work in the orchestra of the Maly Leningrad State Opera House (MALEGOT; now the St. Petersburg Order of the Lenin State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after M.P. Mussorgsky - the Mikhailovsky Theater ). He took the place of the second accompanist of the bass of the orchestra (1930-1935). Then he worked at the Leningrad State Philharmonic.
In March 1935, Mikhail Mikhailovich and his wife, as former people, were expelled from Leningrad for 5 years to Kuibyshev . In May 1935, the composer Yu. A. Shaporin asked for the Kurbatovs — he turned to E. P. Peshkova for help [5] , but in vain. In Kuibyshev, Mikhail Mikhailovich worked as an artist in the symphony orchestra of the Regional Opera Theater (1935), the Regional Opera Theater (now the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theater ) (1935-1940) and as a teacher in a music school (1936-1940).
In 1940, the Kurbatovs returned to Leningrad, Mikhail Mikhailovich continued to work in the philharmonic: soloist and accompanist of the double bass group (1940), deputy accompanist of the double bass group (1944), double bass player (I console, 1946), 1st accompanist of the double bass group (1955–1984 ) [1] .
During his time at the Leningrad Philharmonic, Kurbatov M.M. went on tour in 22 countries. He performed with Soviet chamber groups: quartets named after A.K. Glazunov , L. Beethoven , Komitas , etc.
In 1941-1944 he lived in evacuation in Novosibirsk .
Since 1931, Mikhail Kurbatov was engaged in pedagogical activity: in 1931–1935 he was a teacher in the working evening conservatory of Leningrad, in 1945–1982 he taught the double bass class at the Leningrad Conservatory (temporary teacher of the double bass class (1945), senior lecturer (1947), associate professor (1952) ), acting professor (1968), professor (1970) of the string instruments department of the orchestra department of the performing faculty) [1] .
His students were about 150 double bass players, among them the soloist R. Azarhin [6] , musicians of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic : G. Lukyanik, R. Vayspapir, R. Karapetyants, E. Levinzon, diploma-winner at the International Double Bass Competition in Geneva (1973 year) B. Kozlov, M. Denisov, accompanist of the double bass group of the Maly Opera Theater orchestra P. Drugov and others.

B. Polyakin ) [1] , worked in the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater (then Opera Theater and the Kirov Ballet) [7] .
