The house was built at the turn of the XVII - XVIII centuries (the exact date is unknown) and is the oldest civilian building in the Smolensk region. At the beginning, at the time when Smolensk was part of the Commonwealth , the house served as a city archive (“Polish archive”). [one]
In 1785, the “Polish Archive” was adapted for the forge of the Engineering House. Subsequently, the engineering house was destroyed, and the forge was preserved.
Now the forge is hidden in one of the city courtyards and a little bit deep in the ground. Since 1982, this house housed the Blacksmith's Museum , which features genuine blacksmith tools, anvil , furs, and blacksmith crafts from the 17th and 19th centuries .
