World-famous athletes were trained and trained at this stadium, such as two-time Olympic champion in high jump Elena Isinbaeva , three-time Olympic champion in swimming Yevgeny Sadovy , world champion in open water swimming Yuri Kudinov and many others [2] .

History

The stadium was built in the mid-1950s by order of the Red October factory. The stadium, designed in the style of Soviet neoclassicism [3] by the architect Yuri Petrovich Bocharov [4] , was built as a replacement for the Metallurg stadium, which was destroyed during the Battle of Stalingrad , which was located on the territory where the Iskra sports swimming complex is now located.

In 1957, the Metallurg football team that played at this stadium became the champion of the RSFSR.

In 1984-1985, the stadium accommodated 5,000 spectators [5] [6] .

In 1989, a two-story administrative building was added to the eastern stand of the stadium [7] .

Near the stadium on the banks of the Volga is the "Death Log" - the mass grave of Soviet soldiers and a memorial place where the front line of defense of the 95th Rifle Division passed. The remains of 8 Soviet soldiers found during construction work at the stadium are buried in a mass grave [8] . In 1989, a monument was erected on this site.

After the factory “Red October” the Ministry of Defense became the owner of the stadium [9] . At that time, a sports club of the railway troops was based at the stadium. During the reform of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, all army sports clubs were closed, including the SK ZhDV, which was liquidated in February 2010. Since then, the stadium, which is on the balance of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, arrives in disrepair and is not used for its intended purpose [9] .

In 2013, the Volgograd Region Governor Sergey Bozhenov planned to create a training base for athletes on the basis of the stadium [10] . On behalf of the governor, a request was sent to the Ministry of Defense for the transfer of the stadium to the property of the Volgograd region, but the ministry refused [11] .

In 2017, the authors of the Institute of Architecture and Construction of Volgograd State Technical University developed a project for the reconstruction of the Monolith stadium. The authors of the project Andrei Chuikov and Olga Smirnova suggest the restoration of the architectural appearance of the stadium and the construction of a three-story multi-functional sports facility next to it [3] [12] .
