Biography

Sergei Ivanovich Artobolevsky was born in 1903 in Sergiev Posad (now - the Moscow region). His father, Ivan A. Artobolevsky (1872-1938), a graduate of the Moscow Theological Academy ( 1895 ), taught theology at the Petrovsky Agricultural Academy, was rector of the Peter and Paul Academic Church. On 17.2.1938, he was shot at the Butovo proving ground , in 2000 he was added to the Council of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. The Artobolevsky family had two sons and two daughters.

Sergei Ivanovich studied at the Petrovsky Agricultural Academy, where his father had previously served and taught. On August 31, 1922, he was arrested and accused of anti-Soviet activities; however, due to lack of evidence, on October 12, 1933, he was released by a decision of the GPU Board. In the future, Sergey Ivanovich worked as head of the department of machine design fundamentals of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (1939-1958). Since 1939, he carried out work on the theory of automatic machines. He carried out a detailed classification of the working bodies of machines according to kinematic characteristics, identified typical kinematic schemes. Sergei Ivanovich at the Gorky Automobile Plant took part in the development of an automatic production line. Engaged in inventive activity. Under the guidance of Professor S.I. Artobolevsky, the staff of the Department of Machine Design Fundamentals worked on the development of the theory of drives with a large gear ratio, automatic machines, electrical units, and mechanics of electric vacuum and cable industry machines. At MPEI he taught the course “Theory of Machines and Mechanisms”. In 1952 he published his study guide, "Educational equipment for the course of the theory of mechanisms and machines."

Sergei Ivanovich Artobolevsky died in 1961 at the age of 58 years. He was buried at Vvedensky cemetery .
