Biography

Claude Bailey was born February 22, 1932 in the city of Sarlat-la-Caneda , department of Dordogne in France. Having received a diploma in literature, he wrote articles for the magazines "Cinéma" (1957-1991), " Les Cahiers du cinéma " (1958-1963), then for "Écran" and "L'Avant-scène cinéma", in which he was also the main Editor (1977-1991).

Claude Bailey taught at the University of Paris-1 Pantheon-Sorbonne and in 1973 was the founder and honorary president of the University of Cinematheque; From 1988 to 1993 he headed the Syndicate of French Film Critics .

Claude Bailey wrote more than 20 books, in particular, biographies of French cinematographers Max Ophuls , Marcel Pagnol , Jean Renoir and Jacques Becker .

In 1989, Claude Bailey was a member of the international jury of the 42nd Cannes International Film Festival , led by Wim Wenders [3] .

Claude Bailey died on January 26, 2001 in Cannes at the age of 68.
