Kuhn, Harold

Harold William Coon ( July 29, 1925 , Santa Monica , California , USA - July 2, 2014 , New York , USA) - a famous American mathematician , a specialist in game theory . 1980 John von Neumann Award Winner with Albert Tucker and David Gale. Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Princeton University , is known as the author of the Kuhn theorem, Kuhn poker, and also as co-author of the Kuhn – Tucker condition . He gave a description of the Hungarian algorithm for solving the assignment problem . Some time ago, however, it was discovered that the Hungarian algorithm was first formulated by Karl Gustav Jacobi and was published posthumously in Latin among his other papers in 1890 [4] [5] .

Biography

Coon was born in Santa Monica in 1925 [6] . Throughout his academic life, starting with graduate school, he was closely associated with John Nash . Harold Kun played a large role in attracting the attention of the Nobel Committee to the work of Nash, for which he eventually received the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics [7] . Both of them have long and fruitfully collaborated with Albert Tucker , Nash's supervisor of studies. Harold co-authored The Essential John Nash [8] and a mathematical consultant in the biographical film Mind Games (2001) [9] , which tells the story of John Nash.

He was elected president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

The eldest son, historian Clifford Coon (1952-2015), is known for a scholarship to the American South and as a collector of oral histories. Middle, Nick Coon is a professor of mathematics at the University of Virginia [10] . The youngest son, Jonathan Coon, is director of the Arts and Antiquities department at the New York City Department of Parks and Leisure.

He died on July 2, 2014 [11] .
