History

Founder's certificate for 1/200 of the profit, issued in the name of Mikhail Efrussi of the Odessa Commercial Bank. Odessa, 1870

By the middle of the 19th century, only a few decades after its foundation , Odessa became one of the main banking centers of the south of the Russian Empire. This was facilitated by the actively developing trade of the “ Southern Palmyra ”, first of all - grain exports. [one]

The beginning of the banking business in Odessa was money-changing shops, where, with the permission of the authorities, money was exchanged. Money changers came to the city from the Mediterranean countries along with merchants, salespeople , other business people and settled here firmly. They were replaced by rapidly emerging banking houses. For example, the turnover of Rafalovich’s banking house alone, who was active in the region in 1833–90 , at the end of the 1860s . Reached up to 50 million rubles a year. [2]

The owners of private banking houses were co-founders of joint-stock banks and non-bank credit organizations (mutual land loan partnership founded in 1866 , etc.) Among the founders of the Odessa Commercial Bank in 1870 were the most prominent representatives of the Odessa business elite of the time of the famous banker dynasty of Ephrussi, Ignatius Ephrussi, Fyodor Rodokanaki , [3] and also, as is clear from the Notes to the 1st Paragraph of Chapter I

The founders of the Bank are: Adjutant General Count Stroganov, Adjutant General Prince Semyon Vorontsov , retinue of His Majesty Rear Admiral Nikolai Chikhachev, ... hereditary honorary citizen Ivan Mavro, State Councilor Grigory Marazli ( Odessa city head in 1878-1906 ) ... commerce advisors Leon Ephrussi, Alexander Novikov [4]

.

The main share capital of the Odessa Commercial Bank at the time of establishment was 5 million rubles. [5] In 1878 , the Odessa Joint-Stock Company was transformed into the Odessa Accounting Bank . [6]
