Flag of Apatity

A rectangular double-sided panel with a 2: 3 ratio of width to length , made up of four equal rectangular parts of red and yellow at the top and yellow and blue at the bottom. In the center of the red part of the banner, the head of the spike above the sun is shown in yellow and orange. In the center of the blue part of the panel, crossed miners' hammers of blue color are depicted on top of an open book, shown in yellow (page) and orange (cover) in color. In the center of the entire panel is depicted a white octagonal star with alternating long straight and short oblique rays not reaching the edges of the panel ^[1] . All figures depicted on the flag are also present in the coat of arms of Apatity . The flip side of the flag is a mirror image of its front side.

The figures and elements of the flag symbolically represent the main features of the settlement:

• Rectangular panels symbolize the geographical position of the city located on the Kola Peninsula between Lake Imandra (blue rectangle) and the Khibiny massif (red rectangle), and city-forming industries - Khibiny deposits of apatite-nepheline ores (golden rectangles).
• The white star in the form of " Windrose " is a symbol of discoverers and romantics , geologists and tourists , characterizes the young and developing city of Apatity, which is always on the road, in development, in search. By its color, the star visually indicates the name of the river , on the left bank of which the city is located, as well as the fact that the city is located beyond the Arctic Circle , in the northern latitudes.
• The sun is a symbol of prosperity and the great scientific future of Apatity. It is also of great importance for a city located beyond the Arctic Circle, where a long polar night is replaced by a short but long-awaited summer.
• Spikelet on top of the sun - indicates that the city of Apatity has historically been the agricultural center of the Murmansk region. On the territory of the municipality is located the Polar Experimental Station of the State Scientific Institution All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Production named after N. I. Vavilov of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences .
• Miners' hammers - symbolically indicate the wealth of the territory with minerals and all industrial enterprises of the city. In Apatity there is the only “Geological Park” in Russia, where monolithic blocks represent the main minerals of the Khibiny mountains.
• The open book symbolizes the scientific potential of Apatity, which is the scientific center of the Murmansk region. In the city of Apatity, the Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences is located , which includes 9 research institutes .

Similarly to the description of the coat of arms, the colors of the flag and figures symbolize ^[1] :

• Blue - sublime aspirations, sincerity, devotion, rebirth;
• Red - labor, courage, life-affirming forces, beauty, holiday;
• White - purity, openness, divine wisdom, reconciliation;
• Yellow - the highest values, greatness, wealth, harvest.
