Pharmaceutical Plant Biopharma

In 1896, the Bacteriological Institute was opened in Kiev.

In 1920, the Bacteriological Institute was reorganized into the Sanitary and Bacteriological Institute, and in 1938 - into the "Ukrainian Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology." In 1941-1944, the Institute was evacuated and worked in Kuibyshev. After a series of transformations and renaming (1965, 1978, 1992), in 2009 OJSC Biofarma ^{[1] [2]} arose.

21st Century Modernization

In 2012, the management companies Horizon Capital and FMO became the shareholders of Biopharma, who invested in the construction of a new plant with a quality control laboratory ^[3] .

In 2014, the first phase of the biopharmaceutical research and production complex (NPK) was launched, which was designed by the Linde Group engineering company (Germany) ^[1] .

On June 16, 2015, with the participation of the Minister of Health of Ukraine, as well as diplomatic representatives of Canada, Australia and the United States, the official opening of the Biopharma NPK took place ^{[4] [5] [6]} .

As of 2017, the company's products are the basis, thanks to which Ukraine is included in the list of 12 countries of the world that have launched the production of drugs containing blood coagulation factors ^[7] .

Construction of a new complex

At the end of 2016, the company began construction of the third phase of a plant for fractionation of blood plasma. As of 2017, the main premises were built, the installation of technological equipment (special raw materials storage, refrigeration equipment, finished goods warehouse) began. According to the design capacity, the total volume of blood plasma processing will be over 400 tons per year. At the new facilities, Biopharm plans to launch the production of Imunoglobulin , Albumin , Blood Clotting Factor VIII on a scale that will cover the needs of the Ukrainian market and provide export opportunities. ^{[8] [9] [10]} .

The launch of the third stage is expected in the second quarter of 2018. The total investment is $ 55 million. ^{[11] [12] [13]} .

Scientific

In the first two decades of its existence, the priority was to study the pathogenesis and epidemiology of infectious diseases, serum and vaccines were produced, and help was provided for infected rabies. In 1925, a new BCG vaccine was introduced . In the 1930s, drugs for smallpox, cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and others were tested. In 1965, the company switched to the production of drugs from human blood instead of vaccines and serums ^[2] .

In 2005, the company introduced a solvent / detergent method of virus inactivation for IVIG ^[14] .

The company collaborates with a community of scientists and doctors to exchange observations and implement developments. As of 2017, between Biopharma and the S. Vingranovsky Society of Microbiologists of Ukraine, there is a license agreement for the use of research results for the production of bacterial preparations and products (2013-2017) ^[15] .

In February 2016, Biopharma held in Odessa the conference "The First Interdisciplinary School of Clinical Immunology", designed for physicians of various specialties. During the conference, reports were presented on the latest research developments and the exchange of experience on the use of drugs for the treatment of patients. ^[16] .

Social

Biopharma takes part in solving the problem of hemophilia in Ukraine, the fight against the AIDS epidemic and hepatitis C.

In 2015, as part of a public-private partnership, the company invested in the reconstruction and modernization of the Sumy Regional Blood Center (SOTSK) ^{[17] [18] [19] [20]} .

In 2017, the company initiated an all-Ukrainian social program: “We care. We are together". Its goal is to improve the quality of life of people with hemophilia in Ukraine ^[21] . As part of the program, Biopharma donated to the medical institutions of the Kiev region charity in the amount of UAH 1 million. and announced its intention to build 10 modern centers for the collection of donor plasma in various regions of Ukraine ^{[22] [23]} .

The company produces drugs in three categories:

• prescription (plasma preparations, recombinant, as well as various powders , solutions and extracts for injection , drops, ointments);
• over-the-counter (sprays, pessaries , suppositories , nasal drops, intramural drops);
• dietary supplements ^[24] .
