History
The settlement, from which the city later grew, was founded in 1533 by the conquistador don . The municipality of Maates was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1862 [1] .
Geographical position
The city is located in the northern part of the department, within the Caribbean lowland , on the eastern bank of , at a distance of approximately 32 kilometers southeast of the city of Cartagena , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 12 meters above sea level [2] . The municipality of Maates borders in the north with the territories of the municipalities of San Estanislao and Soplaviento , in the northeast - with the municipality of Kalamar , in the east - with the municipalities of Arroyoondo and Kalamar, in the southeast - with the municipality of San Juan Nepomuseno , in the southwest - with the municipality of Maria la Baha , in the west - with the municipality of Archon . The area of the municipality is 479 km² [1] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2015 was 25,786 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 51.7% of the Maates population, women - 48.3%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 57.9% of the city’s population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 41.9%; Indians - 0.2% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 79.9%.
Economics
The basis of the economy of Maates is agriculture [1] .
57.7% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 29.7% are service enterprises, 12.6% are industrial enterprises [4] .
