History
Due to the fact that a large number of demands were made on the image of Lenin, the Soviet government could entrust the creation of a monument only to outstanding sculptors. The author of the project of the Murmansk monument was Nikolai Tomsky , multiple laureate of high prizes, Hero of Socialist Labor , President of the Academy of Arts [1] .
As a place for the installation of the monument, a small area was chosen, formed by the house in the form of the letter "P", built in the 30s on Stalin Avenue (now Lenin Avenue). Here, land improvement works were carried out, the descent to the avenue was lined with thick granite slabs, and lawns were smashed [2] .
On November 3, 1957, the monument was unveiled to mark the 40th anniversary of the October Revolution . Thousands of people who took part in the ceremony were holding banners, flags and portraits of Lenin. An honor guard was on duty at the foot of the monument [1] .
Later, during the years of the USSR , various festive ceremonies were held here. The monument was installed from the rostrum, from which the authorities welcomed the demonstrators on May 1 and November 7 [1] .
Description
The height of the bronze sculpture is 6 meters , the pedestal lined with red-brown Karelian granite is about 11 meters [3] .
Lenin is depicted in a traditional pose: his left hand, having thrown open his open coat, holds the lapel of his jacket, his right hand is down, his cap is clamped in it; the gaze is directed forward.
