Biography

Born in Alsace (after the Franco-Prussian War, Alsace came under the jurisdiction of the German Empire ). Since 1890 he lived in Paris . Engaged in scientific work. He specialized in the study of Romanesque and Germanic philology.

In the 1890s actively played in chess tournaments organized in the famous cafe " Regans ". In these tournaments, he repeatedly won and won prizes, ahead of such prominent chess players as D.M. Yanovsky , J. Taubengauz , S. Zittenfeld , A. Claire , J. Arnou de Riviere . Later he participated less in competitions, although he continued to achieve serious success. In 1914, he won the unofficial championship of France (the competition had the status of the championship of France among amateurs).

He was engaged in chess journalism. He published articles under the pseudonym A. Geoffroy-Dose ( fr. A. Geoffroy-Dausay ). He collaborated with the French magazines La Stratégie and Les cahiers de l'échiquier français , as well as the Italian edition L Léco degli Scacchi . One of the most noteworthy articles is "Parallel progress of chess and civilization" (published in 1918). In 1922, throughout the year he published the experimental magazine " Cinéma du jeu des Échecs ", in which he published the games according to the storyboard principle (each move was accompanied by a diagram ).

In 1921, a book by A. Goetz, Cours d'échecs, Exposé de l'évolution du jeu et de la pratique actuelle des maîtres, was published at the Paris publishing house Librairie Chapelot. ").

In 1923, Goetz was the chief judge of the first official championship of France.
